ASEAN as a part of ASIAN

Many people would be confused by these two names, ASIAN and ASEAN. While the first one is a specified geographical region on the world map, the latter is a regional governmental organisation in the souteast of Asia.

ASEAN is the acronym for the Association of Southeast Asian which was established on the 8th August 1967. The first five original member states were Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines. It then expanded to include Brunei on 8 January 1984, Vietnam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999.
